Bambusa vulgaris

Bambusa vulgaris

This fast growing bamboo has a beautiful green culm that can get 4″ in diameter.  It has an open growth structure and loves water.  The problem I have with it is that it will freeze and then it’s a mess to clean up.  It also is not a good bamboo for building because it has a high starch content.  It has a nice open structure so it can be pruned to be more of a screen then a barrier and is quite hard to kill even after if freezes.  I had mine freeze to the ground three years in a row and still grow to 25′ the next season so that is saying something.  I have not had that experience with any other bamboo.  Vulgaris is fun because it grows quite easily.  If you take a mature culm and lay it in the ground during the rainy season it is quite easy to propagate.  It has often been considered a weedy bamboo but I like it’s chunkiness and pretty green color.
